Credit Unions

How Engage  is helping Credit Unions in Renfrewshire

Our Credit Union Development Officer supports the credit unions to increase their membership, recruit volunteers and provides advice on how they can become more sustainable.

In the upcoming year, the focus will be on:

  • Increasing savings through the Renfrewshire Council initiative, iSave, which gives every primary 7 pupil, who is moving on to secondary school, £10 to open their credit union account
  • Encouraging local businesses to sign up for the Payroll Deduction Scheme. This scheme assists employees to save directly with a credit union from their wages.
  • Continuing to act as secretariat for Renfrewshire’s Affordable Credit Group. This group seeks to identify and promote affordable credit for the Renfrewshire community.

The Credit Unions

There are 5 Credit Unions operating in Renfrewshire of varying sizes, offering a variety of services: Gleniffer Credit Union; Johnstone Credit Union; Renfrewshire-Wide Credit Union; Scotwest Credit Union and White Cart Credit Union.

A credit union is a ‘mutual’ organisation. This means that it is owned by its members and all the benefits are for members alone – keeping the money in Renfrewshire for the benefit of the people of Renfrewshire.

Credit unions are not for profit organisations that offer members a variety of financial products and services based on savings and loans. This means, any money that comes into the credit union, goes straight back out to its members – we do not make any profit from the service.

Credit unions view and treat each member as an individual with a different story. This ethos, along with the understanding that each member is a vital part of the community, assists us to provide members with the most personalised form of financial support.

Credit unions have a board of directors that is made up of members. This means that any decisions made by the credit union have the members at the centre of the decision.
